Performer Jaya Drats, B.A. and M.S. Jaya Drats (pronounced jay-yeah) ![]() Started singing at birth and continues with his own version of surreal warbling. Sometimes hypnotic and trance-like, sometimes cutting and powerful, Drats sings about his love for nature and animals, and for justice and social progress. His music displays influences from Radiohead, Kate Bush,Hugo Largo, King Crimson, Ruby, Fiona Apple, Suzanne Vega, Sade, Peter Gabriel, Stump, and Material. In Japan, Drats will form a group of musicians to perform in Tokyo and beyond, but it's not just avant-garde rock/pop, it's also theatrical, with each show having a plot and thematic story-line, and the audience gets to participate, and decide the outcome. Are Japanese audiences ready for this? "I have found Japanese audiences to be interested in tradition, yet inspired and enthused about new forms of art and technology. I look forward to experimenting with a fusion of art forms that will truly stimulate the senses and promote positive change in the world," said Drats. Drats seeks a great pianist, familiar with pop music, a bass player, preferably one who plays Chapman stick or fretless bass, a percussionist who can play Western style drums but also plays other percussion instruments, and a flutist who plays woody-sounding bamboo flutes like the shakuhachi. If any of these musicians can sing, that's great too. Otherwise, Drats may seek a female singer (or a male singer with a very high voice) to contrast with Drats' baritone/tenor vocal range. Drats has sung and wrote lyrics for bands in Boston, Los Angeles, Hawaii, and San Francisco. He has performed in plays and rock operas, acted and directed films and videos, and has received awards for his work. Drats has a MS in Mass Communication from Boston University, and BA in World Arts and Cultures/ Theater, Film and Television, from UCLA, but he loves singing the most. |
